Eyelid Surgery Recovery for Shelby Township | Livonia, Michigan
After undergoing cosmetic eyelid surgery, there will be some degree of bruising and/or swelling that typically lasts 7-10 days, but can last longer. Incisions are carefully hidden so any scarring will fade over time. On the upper eyelids, the incision is placed on the natural eyelid crease. On the lower eyelids, the incision is hidden behind the eyelid or just under the eyelashes.

Care after cosmetic eyelid surgery
The application of ice, cool compresses, or a bag of frozen peas for about 15 minutes every hour will minimize swelling and bruising for the first 48 hours. After these 2 days, warm compresses are beneficial for resolution of swelling.
It is important to avoid strenuous activity such as heavy lifting for the first week. During this time, reading and light activities are acceptable. Sleeping should be done with head elevation, as is accomplished with multiple pillows.
An antibiotic ointment is used twice daily on any sutures. Only a small amount is required, and this can be applied with a clean cotton-tipped applicator or Q-tip.
Pain is minimal after the procedure. Tylenol is usually sufficient for pain control, but aspirin and ibuprofen should be avoided for 3 days after surgery as these can promote bruising and/or bleeding. Severe pain should be discussed immediately with your surgeon.
Showering can be done, and it is allowed for the operative area to get wet or rinsed. Aggressive rubbing and soap to the area should be avoided. Makeup should not be applied to the area while healing is taking place.
Sutures are removed in approximately one week. This is done in a quick office visit.
Artificial tears may be used as needed for dryness of the eyes during the healing period.
Recovery and healing is an ongoing process. It can take months to achieve the final result, although the eyelids most often look great after the first one to three weeks.
